Coincidental Celebration - Fancy that eh?

A chicken farmer went to a local bar, sat next to a woman, and ordered a glass of champagne.

The woman perks up and says, “How about that? I just ordered a glass of champagne, too! ”

“What a coincidence,” he said, “This is a special day for me, I’m celebrating.”

“This is a special day for me, too, and I’m also celebrating!,” says the woman.

“What a coincidence,” says the man.

As they clinked glasses he asked, “What are you celebrating?”

“My husband and I have been trying for some time to have a child, and today my gynecologist told me I’m pregnant!”

“What a coincidence,” says the man. “I’m a chicken farmer. For years all my hens were infertile, but today they’re finally laying fertilized eggs.”

“That’s great!” says the woman, “How did your chickens become fertile?”

“I switched cocks,” he replied.

She smiled and said, “What a coincidence!”

Amish elevator.....

clip_image001A fifteen year old Amish boy and his father were in a mall. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny,  silver walls that could move apart and then slide back together again.

The boy asked, 'What is this Father?' The father (never having seen clip_image002an elevator) responded, 'Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life, I don't know what it is.'

While the boy and his father were watching with amazement, a fat old  lady in a wheel chair moved up to the moving walls and pressed a  button. clip_image003The walls opened, and the lady rolled between them into a  small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched the small numbers above the walls light up sequentially.

clip_image004They continued to watch until it reached the last number. and then the numbers began to light in the reverse order.  Finally the walls opened up again and a gorgeous 24-year-old blond stepped out.

clip_image005The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman, said quietly to his son.....'Go get your Mother'

Avoiding The Booze Bus Blues

I would like to share a personal experience about drinking and driving .

Some of us have been known to have brushes with the authorities from time to time on the way home after a "social session".

My story is I was out for an evening with friends and had several cocktails followed by some rather nice red wine.

Feeling jolly I still had the sense to know that I may be over the limit. So I did something that I've never done before - I took a cab home.

Sure enough on the way home there was a police road block but since it was a cab they waved it past.

I arrived home safely without incident. This was a real surprise as I had never driven a cab before, I don't even know where I got it and now that it's in my garage I don't know what to do with it.

Provincial Experience

Last night I went to a VIP night at the Sport 22 club and an American woman asked me,

“Where are you from?

“Australia”  I replied

“ Wow”, she said. “Your English is perfect.”

(Despite feeling a bit like a “your ok redneck” it was a great the evening.)

Sniffer

A man settled into his window seat and soon a policeman joined him with a Black Labrador which jumped up into the middle seat

The first man looked quizzically and asked why is the dog was allowed on the plane.
The second man explained the dog was Police Drugs Enforcement Agency  'sniffing dog'. 'His name is Sniffer and he's the best there is. I'll show you when are airborne, when he goes to work.'

The plane soon took off, and once it levelled the Policeman commanded Sniffer to 'search'.

Sniffer jumped down and slowly moved down the aisle sniffing as he went. Soon he purposefully stopped next to a woman for several seconds and then returned and put one paw on the  policeman's arm.

The Policeman said, 'Good boy', 'and turned to man number one and said “That woman is in possession of marijuana, so I'm noting her seat and the authorities can apprehend her when we land.

'Gee, that's pretty good,' replied the first man.

Once again, the Policeman sent Sniffer to search. The Lab sniffed about and sat down beside a man for a few seconds, and then returned to its seat, this time placing two paws on the agent's arm.

The Policeman said, 'Two paws means the guys has cocaine, so again, I'm making a note of his seat number for the local police.'

'I like it!' said his seat mate.

The third time Policeman told Sniffer to 'search' .the dog followed the same routine but time came racing back to the agent and jumped into the middle seat and proceeded to shit all over the place.

The first man was really disgusted by this and couldn't figure out how or why a well-trained dog would behave like that A  bit miffed he said 'What's going  on?'

The Policeman nervously replied, 'He's just found a bomb.'

Places I have been

clip_image001I have been in many places, but I've never been in Cahoots, hear you can't go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with others.

I've never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there.

I have, however, been in Sane. I has no airport so you have to be driven there.I have made several trips there, thanks to my friends, family and work.

I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too much on physical activity anymore.

I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place, and I try not to visit there too often.

I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.

Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older.

One of my favourite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get!

And, sometimes I think I am in Vincible but life shows me I am not!

DANGEROUS IMPORTED FOODS

The following article is circulating the internet. It reads like it originated in North America somewhere and is about the dangers of buying Chinese food product. It warns to:

WATCH WHAT YOU BUY. ESPECIALLY HIGHLINER FISH PRODUCTS; all come from China, even though the box says 'product of Canada', it is from China and 'processed' in Canada, that is, the coating is added and packaged in Canada only! The fish are raised in pens using chemicals that are banned in Canada as cancer causing but legal in China . This was exposed on CBC TV's Marketplace.

The story also has some disturbing pictures that if they truly depict what is going on there. it is a concern. I would venture to add that it may not only applicable to China. But it makes you think about how food is processed and to consider at its source.

THERE ARE NO REGULATED LAWS FOR FOOD PROCESSED IN CHINA , HONG KONG , VIETNAM AND THAILAND !!

The world is scared of Chinese made 'black hearted goods'.

But can you differentiate the ones is made in the USA , Philippines , Taiwan or China ? The first 3 digits of the barcode tell you the country code wherein the product was made.

E.g. Barcodes starting with 690 until 695 are all MADE IN CHINA. 471 is Made in Taiwan. clip_image001
Here is a bigger list

00 ~ 13 USA & CANADA
30 ~ 37 FRANCE
40 ~ 44 GERMANY
49 ~ JAPAN
50 ~ UK
57 ~ Denmark
64 ~ Finland
76 ~ Switzerland and Lienchtenstein
628 ~ Saudi-Arabia
629 ~ United Arab Emirates
740 ~ 745 - Central America
All 480 Codes are Made in the Philippines

For specifics on goods from a China should alert you to read labels and always buy fresh when you can.

Well, are you enjoying seeing Chinese food popping up in your supermarket left and right? Have you noticed you can't buy a single package of fish that isn't made in China (or Vietnam )? Do you think your food from China is processed in a sanitary manner, and thus safe to eat?

Have you a taste for chicken?  Take a look at this!!

These undercover enclosed pictures speak a thousand words. Avoid buying all processed food packaged in China. Anything goes! We just don't know what else is in those packages. Unlike in the U.S. and CANADA , China does not have laws regulating food processing.
Basically, do not buy any processed food from China , also Hong Kong , too. MANY companies are using a Hong Kong address to avoid this type of image reputation.

Early dawn, starts the day by riding around to collect dead chickens.

Total of 5 riders are hired by the boss to ride to farms to buy dead chickens.
clip_image002

A dead chicken cost 1 RMB and would be sold at 9 RMB after processing.
clip_image003

Storage for the dead chickens in the court yard.
clip_image004

Carcasses are thrown everywhere.
clip_image005

And on the floor....
Four employees start de-feathering the dead fowl after soaking in boiling water from a rusty wok.

clip_image006

Enduring the pungent odor, but sometimes, it gets so terrible that even the most experienced of the workers would puke.
clip_image007

Workers rushing to get the chickens de-feathered.
clip_image008

A discarded bath tub being used to soak the bare skin dead chickens.... The contaminated water would have accelerated the decomposition process.
clip_image009

clip_image010

After the color dye, its creepy to find that they are quite

tenderized.

And now presenting the mouth watering Charcoal Roasted Chicken!

Bangkok and all that - Families do Care

For those with an interest in Bangkok I am keeping updates on the comments section of my other blog

 image

Click on the picture to link to some photos I took yesterday. This one shows soldiers in front of MacDonald's on Sukhumvit Soi 4  The tourist area of Sukhumvit generally was still quite active yesterday but as you can see the Army is very present in the area and blocking access to the trouble zones to the west just beyond the expressway.

On a personal note I got this is a message from my sister Julie this morning after she was talking about me with our other sister Nada.

Hi Gord

I've been thinking of you being amongst it all in Thailand. I saw Nades last week and she said things were not good. Today she sent me your update from your blog so I hope you are actually out of there by now back in Melbourne.

If not I hope it is not long and you are able to travel safely. Apart from your personal safety I expect it will be having a huge impact on your business which will add to your concerns.

We are thinking of you and hope you remain safe.

Take care

love Jules x and a big O

Thanks to everyone who has sent their concerns. Needless to say everyone here including me is being sensible. It is not our issue so no need to be a hero.

It is of course very serious but to keep it light hearted here is my rely to her.

Thanks Jules,

I am still here but on a flight out on Thursday. I am ok and staying indoors. I have some supplies of G&T plus a some bottles of red left, which guarantees to bring in some company for me. It is also quite nice working around the pool it in between dips.

Business is actually quite badly affected now and I have not been to our office for nearly a month in the centre of the troubles.

I did have someone this morning book a meeting this week to fly in to close a deal we have pending. I told him it will have to wait as it is too risky moving around the city.

In the meantime I am keeping the blog updated with news as it breaks.

http://www.performancecontroller.com/blog/2010/05/being-on-the-spot-in-bangkok-is-not-a-good-scene/#comments

Thanks for thinking of me.

Cheers

Gordon

Being on the spot in Bangkok is not a good scene.

Bangkok 9PM May 15 2010
I published an update about the situation in Bangkok today on www.PerformanceController.com But as many don't get that I am posting it again here. For those who have friends in Bangkok I will keep that one updated in the comments section as events unfold which you can check.  Others watching the crisis in Bangkok can also post any news updates there too.

Since then at At 5:35 today Saturday, from my apartment in Sukhumvit, I heard what sounded like a bomb explode. Minutes later local news reports said it was an M79 grenade fired at a police flat in the Lumpini area. It injured three women and a policeman. It was roported the grenade landed on the fourth floor of the flat building.

~000~

Sukhumi Road between Soi 1 thru 19 and Asoke when I went out for dinner about 7PM had soldiers and heavy army equipment highly present and the access passage under the freeway from Sukhumvit to Ploenchit Road, going west was completely blocked off. The skytrain which closed at 4PM had army personnel at entrances. I presume this is to limit unauthorised entry and the potential for lofty access for people who may do something to cause harm to others.

What someone said looked like razor wire has also been dumped on the central medium strip near Sukhumvit 7 clearly in readiness to limit trouble if needed. It was quite unsettling there and with tensions mounting.

I am now inside for a quite night at home and what seem a very good choice.

Bangkok 2PM May 15 2010
This week  when I returned to imageBangkok the scene is far from good.  While I was at a business dinner last night in the peace of the famous Encota Italian restaurant, violence was erupting just nearby in the city for the second day running.
This morning when I awoke 16 more people are dead including some foreigners with scores more injured as the government tries to end the two month long protest rallies.
Heading along the 2 Km stretch from my home in Sukhumvit to our Bangkok office in Central World in Chilton is not an option as it stands in epicenter of the troubles. On that stretch all business there is now closed.
All around the city in the last few days I have seem army and flak jacketed police which tells the tail of the tensions here. To visit one of our clients in the east of the city means I have to go past the Prime Ministers home which since the trouble began has been heavily guarded.

Following last nights violence as I went for some breakfast nearby this morning, I was most disturbed at hearing a motor bike rider say he had just seen three people lying dead on the road near the rally zone. He said  they been left unattended because no-one wanted to risk their life to remove the bodies.
As an insight to the perspective of some who is involved in the troubles, sadly this morning I read a former senator and secretary of a children foundation, Wallop Tangkhananurak, called on leaders to immediately evacuate children and aged people from Rajprasong rally zone. Wallop said about 70 per of the demonstrators are children and aged people.

And this morning Silom Road, which is always bustling, became deserted. It has just been reported that only a few 7-Eleven shops are remaining open. At 10:30 am , troops used orange plastic roadblocks to set up several layers of barricades to seal off the area.

The escalating gravity was lifted on Thursday when Seh Daeng, who is one of the protest leaders was shot. He remains in critical condition after being shot in the head while engaged in an interview with foreign press.  This and ongoing events is reported to be fueling calls by protest leaders for people in some provinces to come to Bangkok to bolster the protesters.

I just heard report of two explosions being heard in front of the Ua-Chuliang Building near the Saladeng Intersection  (11:40 am Saturday.) The sound of gunfire followed the explosions.
The major area of troubled activity is in the clusters around the Rajprasong intersection as shown on this map.

image
Needleless to say, it is not a safe scene to be in the streets near the troubles so the advice is to keep a safe distance and don't venture far. I intend doing just that until I leave for Australia next week.

~000~

Following May 15, 2010 chronology published in the Nation earlier this morning shows events of a military operation to close in on the red shirts' protest site.

6pm: Two grenades, believed to have been launched using an M-79 grenade launcher, explode in Soi Sala Daeng and in front of the Dusit Thani Hotel. There are no reports of injuries.
6.20pm: Explosion is heard at the red-shirts' stage on Rajprasong intersection, as speakers jump down and tell protesters to duck. No injuries or deaths are reported and the cause of the explosion remains unknown.
6.40pm: An armoured vehicle moves into Sala Daeng intersection from Wireless Road. Protesters throw bottles, petrol bombs and lit firecrackers at troops.

What we were reading in Mar, 2009

I pinched this from the http://www.performancecontroller.com/ blog. Or PCB as we call it. You can check it out if you like. But to be honest, it is just one of those boring business blogs that waffle on about business. This material I wrote for them so I figure it is not plagiarism, is it? Unless they catch me stealing my work back.

rapheastman1Well anyway It seems ages since recession ended doesn't it?.

My Quote for this month

I have seen the future and it doesn't work".-

This is such a great one liner by Canadian author and journalist Robert Fulford

At PCB They did a bunch of posts and their readership short thru the roof, despite my suggestion to turn off. Clearly people have too much idle time. Or is reading replacing TV as a pastime.. I wonder?

Here is some of what they wrote :

Actually some of it is not bad!!!

Here is what they said they read about:

Sawbones Online fans get a second book

imageThis month we saw, yes another Wood, add a second book to the reading maize. Trevor Wood an Australian illustrator, has again dug deep into the realms of the living dead with his comic books about a zombie odd couple. In this he re-animates the dead with the comic "Sawbones".

Wood, who teamed up with writer Jen Breach, who together have been publishing weekly comics for over two years with books also coming in multiple story format.

The two main characters, are rough and ready cowboy, Sheriff Sawyer and pompous English buffoon, Bones O'Brien, They get involved in comic adventures, with a focus firmly on slapstick. "The violence is implied," Wood says. who adds "We put them in everyday situations instead of dealing with the situation normally, they eat your brains,"

In keeping with http://www.performanceecontroller.com/ policy of no direct plugs, even to ourselves, (what a silly idea that is) we cannot suggest you visit their website and order a book. Actually that is not true. The truth is if you don't get an order in quickly, you will most likely have to go on back-order and wait.

Sawbones Volume 2 and 1 are both available at comic stores and http://sawbonesonline.com/comic/

Beating the Tom Tom Update

Microsoft and TomTom announced they have reached a settlement in their respective patent suits.

As part of the deal, TomTom will pay Microsoft for coverage for the software maker's mapping-related patents as well as the file management patents that Microsoft claimed were infringed by TomTom's use of the Linux kernel. Microsoft will also get access to the TomTom patents that were cited in TomTom's countersuit against Microsoft, although Microsoft won't be making any payment to TomTom.

In a statement, the two companies said that the settlement provides TomTom patent coverage "in a manner that is fully compliant with TomTom's obligations under the General Public Lucense Version 2." As part of the agreement, TomTom will "remove from its products the functionality related to two file management systems patents," over the next two years. The agreement protects TomTom's customers under the patents during that time, the companies said.

Russia Microsoft Dichotomy

image This month, Ina Frieda a writer at CNet, has her attention focused on on Microsoft. In one article this month she talks about the Software giant coming under anti trust scrutiny in Russia. Talk about maturing, it was not long ago Russia was listed on Microsoft's piracy board as one of the highest offending countries outside Indonesia. It is amazing how the wheel turns.

Anyway if you are interested in Microsoft check out Ina's Recent posts from Beyond Binary

Pirates and who Benefits

image It is a well know that John Kemeny and Thomas Kurtz wrote the original Dartmouth BASISC programming software that got Microsoft started. As the story goes Bill Gates and Paul Allen, the founders of Microsoft, then modified it and sold as their first product at Micro-Soft (that was the company's name when it started business).

According to Sam Varghese at ITWire in his post last month he adds that everyone agrees the famous whine in 1976 saw Gates invent the term "software piracy." He also outlines more about Gates view on the ling term benefits that will flow to Microsoft from China when they do start paying for software.

I for one have always been convinced that the 3 US dollarsimage price you pay for any software in Jakarta is a Cartel level rate agreed by vendors to propagate its software into this developing nation. In Thailand a common folk law view is the Pantip Plaza, is actually owned by Microsoft Pantip is the home of the 15 minute pirate copy burners.

India consultant service coming of Age?

IMG_6867 And here's Kate the Uma-Kataya, label queen also of The Dancing Feather Fashion House fame,

She is in India now buying and coordinating her designer ranges in productions for the summer releases this year. Nothing new there but as a student of India and the constant change in the fashion business, she noticed the consultants trend is very interesting.

India as a country has had an English speaking base for over 400 years and the richness of this and other languages makes for interesting influences on their cultures.

As India maturing commercially continues with its increasing economic importance, so does the Indian consultants influence in the world's largest managements.

“Conventional wisdom in the US holds that consulting firms like McKinsey have nothing to fear from Indian firms. The reason is that Indian firms are most unlikely to win high-end strategy and board level consulting business, at the expense of the likes of McKinsey and Bain, because the cultural barriers are way too high.”?

image

That is a quote from this Indian journal which challenges this conventional wisdom as it goes on to ask “will companies like Wipro and Infosys work to help US and other developed nation firms change their culture”?

Check it out www.indiajournal.com/pages/event.php?id=6300
